From above, its historic centre is a dense knot of streets around the Grote Markt and St Michael's Church, enclosed by a ring road that marks the shift to more open residential and industrial districts.
A canal runs from the city toward the Leie, lined with industrial sites, and the railway crosses the city on its route through Flanders.
