San Benito lies on the southern shore of Lake Petén Itzá in Guatemala's Petén department. It forms one continuous urban area with Santa Elena. Together they face the small island of Flores, which a causeway links to the mainland. The lakeshore towns are the main gateway to the Maya sites of the Petén, including Tikal, which is reached by road from here. Mundo Maya International Airport lies nearby, on the edge of Santa Elena.
