Şereflikoçhisar lies in the south-east of Ankara Province, on the north-eastern shore of Lake Tuz, the vast shallow salt lake at the heart of central Anatolia. On the map, the town's streets gather on ground above the lakeshore, while to the west and south the land gives way to the flat, pale surface of the lake and its salt pans.
Lake Tuz is Turkey's second-largest lake and one of the saltiest in the world, supplying a large share of the country's salt. In summer much of its water evaporates, leaving a white crust that draws photographers and visitors. Salt works along its shores add long, rectangular evaporation ponds to the landscape.
