Shumen sits in northeastern Bulgaria where the lowland meets the steep northern edge of the Shumen Plateau. From above, the town forms a long band at the base of that rise. Denser central blocks give way to looser residential quarters, and the forested plateau fills the southern and western side of the frame with contour lines instead of streets.
Two of the city's best-known sights sit on the high ground. The ruins of Shumen Fortress sit on a spur west of the centre, and the massive Founders of the Bulgarian State monument, completed in 1981, crowns the plateau and can be seen from much of the town. In the lower city, the Tombul Mosque is often described as the largest in Bulgaria.
