Şişli covers a strip of Istanbul's European side north of Taksim, and its map is organised around one long spine. Halaskargazi Avenue and its continuation Büyükdere Avenue run north through the district, with a metro line beneath them. Dense apartment blocks line both sides, and the ground falls away into valleys and slopes toward the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn.
At the southern end, Nişantaşı and Osmanbey form a grid of boutique streets and older apartment buildings, with Maçka Park stretching down a valley nearby. To the north, Mecidiyeköy and the business corridor beyond it rise into office towers. The house where Atatürk stayed in 1918–19 is now a museum on Halaskargazi Avenue. The district's history is mostly that of the late Ottoman and republican eras. The street pattern shows it: irregular lanes near the old centre give way to the long straight lines of twentieth-century growth.
