Skellefteå lies in Västerbotten in northern Sweden, along the Skellefte River a short way inland from the Gulf of Bothnia. From above, the river is the main feature. It crosses the town in broad bends, and the central grid, the parks and the residential areas are all arranged on its banks.
The town has several well-known sights. Lejonströmsbron is a long wooden bridge from the eighteenth century. Bonnstan is a church town of small wooden cottages near the old church. In recent years Skellefteå has also built Sara Kulturhus, one of the world's tallest buildings made largely of timber.
