Södermalm is the large island on the south side of central Stockholm, linked to Gamla stan through the junction at Slussen and bordered by Lake Mälaren to the west and the Baltic waters of Saltsjön to the northeast. From above, a dense grid of streets fills a rocky plateau, with steep cliffs along the northern shore and bridges on every side.
Once a working-class district, Södermalm is now one of the city's most sought-after neighbourhoods, known for cafes, independent shops and the area around Nytorget often called SoFo. Much of Stieg Larsson's Millennium series is set on its streets. The northern clifftop, along Monteliusvägen and Fjällgatan, offers some of the best views over Stockholm.
