Strzegom is one of the oldest towns in Lower Silesia, and its centre still follows the layout of a medieval chartered town. On a map, the market square sits at the middle of a small oval of streets, and a ring road traces the route of the old town walls. Outside that ring, newer districts and industrial sites spread toward the surrounding farmland.
The town's other defining feature is granite. Strzegom has been known for its stone for centuries, and the quarries around it appear on the map as sharp-edged pits, many of them now filled with water. Those irregular shapes, with fields and rail lines around them, set the landscape apart. A Strzegom map poster shows a compact historic core sitting inside a landscape marked by quarrying.
Above the rooftops rises the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, a large Gothic church that is out of scale with the size of the town. On the map it is a solid block just off the square.
