Sumbawa Besar is the main town of western Sumbawa, an island in the Lesser Sunda chain east of Lombok. It lies on the north coast, near the broad waters of Saleh Bay. From above, the town is spread over low ground near the shore, with streets forming an irregular grid that runs back from the coast toward rising land inland.
Rivers and streams cross the town on their way to the sea, and the coastline shows the curves of beaches and small inlets. Offshore, Moyo Island appears as a large shape in the water to the north. The streets thin out quickly into rice fields and hills, so the town has a clear edge on the map.
