Suphan Buri stands on the Tha Chin river, known locally as the Suphan river, west of the Chao Phraya basin in central Thailand. The land is almost completely flat. From above, the town follows the river's gentle curves, and roads fan out across a wide grid of rice paddies, canals and village clusters. Water is everywhere on the map: river, irrigation channels and field ditches.
The city is the capital of a province with deep roots in Thai history. Nearby is the Don Chedi memorial, which commemorates King Naresuan's elephant battle in the sixteenth century. In town, the tall Banharn-Jamsai observation tower rises above the low skyline. Rice farming defines the surrounding province, and the rhythm of planting and harvest shapes the landscape seen from above.
