Târgu Secuiesc, known in Hungarian as Kézdivásárhely, is a small town in Covasna County in the Székely Land of eastern Transylvania. It grew up as a market and craft guild town, and most of its residents are Hungarian-speaking. The mountains of the Eastern Carpathians rise to the east.
Its plan is unusual. At the centre is a long, wide market square, and from its sides many narrow lanes lead back into the old building plots. These courtyard alleys are called udvarterek, and they give the old town a comb-like pattern that is unlike any other Romanian town. Beyond that core, the streets open out into the farmland of the Kézdi basin.
