Tavira sits on both banks of the Gilão river, a few kilometres from the Atlantic in Portugal's eastern Algarve. The old town climbs a small hill on the western bank, where the ruins of a castle look over tiled roofs and church towers. Across the water, streets spread out on flatter ground towards the lagoon.
The town is known for its many churches and for the old bridge across the Gilão, often called the Roman bridge, although its current form is medieval and later. Seaward, the Ria Formosa lagoon system separates the mainland from Ilha de Tavira, a long barrier island of beaches reached by boat.
A Tavira map poster is unusually rich in water. The river winds through the centre, the salt pans form a geometric pattern of rectangles to the south, and the lagoon channels break the coast into islands and sandbanks. Around them, the dense old streets hold the historic heart.
