Tecax sits in southern Yucatán, where the flat limestone plain ends at a line of low hills. From above, the town is a patient checkerboard. Numbered streets run in straight lines outward from a central square, and the blocks keep their near-square proportions until they break up into scrubland and field tracks.
The town's shape comes from its setting. On a peninsula with almost no surface rivers, there are no waterways to bend the streets. The grid simply runs until it meets the rise of the hills, and a small chapel on one of those slopes looks back over the rooftops. Roads leave the town in several directions and tie it to neighbouring towns across the plain.

South of the centre the land begins to rise, and a chapel on the slope overlooks the town. It is one of the few places where the street pattern gives way to terrain.
