Former lakebed
The flat ground around Tepexpan is part of the old basin of Lake Texcoco, which is why its streets spread evenly without the curves that hills or rivers would force.

Tepexpan Map Poster & Print
Tepexpan lies in the municipality of Acolman in the State of México, on the flat land northeast of Mexico City. On a map it appears as a mesh of streets without a single dominant centre, blocks growing outward from older roads and filling the space between them. Open ground and fields still separate it in places from neighbouring towns, and the hills of the valley rise in the distance.
The land here was once close to the shores of Lake Texcoco, which covered much of the Valley of Mexico before it was drained. Tepexpan is known for a prehistoric discovery: in 1947 human remains, later called Tepexpan Man, were found nearby, and the town has a small museum devoted to the find and to the region's ancient past.
A Tepexpan map poster shows the kind of place that is easy to overlook on a large regional map. At a closer scale, the pattern of streets becomes clear, with straight roads crossing the plain and denser clusters where the town has grown over time. In black and white, it becomes a portrait of a specific corner of the Valley of Mexico.

Growing street mesh
Older roads form the backbone of the town, and newer blocks fill in between them, creating a pattern of varied grids that shows how the town expanded over recent decades.
Place of an ancient find
Tepexpan gave its name to prehistoric human remains discovered nearby in 1947, a find that places this quiet stretch of the valley in the long story of early settlement.
