Terrace lies in the valley of the Skeena River in north-western British Columbia, where the Kitsumkalum River joins it from the north. On a map the Skeena is a broad, braided presence, with islands and gravel bars dividing its flow. The town sits on the flat benches that give it its name, raised above the river.
The Yellowhead Highway runs through town, connecting the interior with the coast at Prince Rupert, and the Coast Mountains rise steeply on both sides of the valley. Terrace is a service centre for a wide region, and a base for fishing, hiking and skiing in the surrounding wilderness.
