Ticul lies in the south of Yucatán state, where the flat limestone plain meets the low ridge of the Puuc hills. The town follows a classic colonial plan. A regular grid of numbered streets is centred on a main plaza and church, with blocks stretching evenly in every direction. On a map that grid stands out crisply against the surrounding scrubland and fields.
The town is known across Yucatán for its pottery and shoemaking, and it is a common base for visiting Uxmal and other Maya sites along the Ruta Puuc. A large colonial church anchors the centre and faces the plaza, where much of daily life takes place.
