Todaraisingh is a historic town in the Tonk district of Rajasthan, set in the semi-arid country south of Jaipur. On a map the old centre shows as a dense, irregular web of lanes, with a lake on its edge and newer roads extending outward across open farmland dotted with low rocky rises.
The town is known for its stepwells, or baoris, built centuries ago to store water in a dry climate. The most famous, Hadi Rani ki Baori, has deep stone steps descending to the water and has drawn attention from travellers and filmmakers. Old temples and gateways sit throughout the historic quarter.
