Torrington is the largest city in Litchfield County, in northwestern Connecticut. On a map its downtown sits in the valley of the Naugatuck River. The river's branches meet near the centre, and the streets climb out of the valley into residential neighbourhoods on the surrounding hills.
The city grew as an industrial centre in the nineteenth century, known especially for brass and metal goods, and older mill sites still line the river. Torrington is also the birthplace of the abolitionist John Brown. Downtown, the Warner Theatre, an Art Deco movie palace from the 1930s, remains a local landmark.
