Ujar lies in central Azerbaijan, on the broad lowland that stretches between the Greater Caucasus foothills and the Kura River. The land is flat and heavily farmed. From above, the town looks like a loose web of streets gathered around its main roads, with the long straight line of the railway cutting across the settlement.
As the administrative centre of its district, Ujar has a denser core of streets than the villages around it. Further out, the pattern loosens into garden plots, irrigation channels and field boundaries.
