Vagharshapat Map Poster & Print
Vagharshapat, widely known as Etchmiadzin, lies on the flat Ararat plain west of Yerevan. The city is the seat of the Catholicos of All Armenians, and its plan centres on the walled complex of the Mother See. This large green enclosure of courtyards, gardens and churches stands out clearly on any street-scale map.
Etchmiadzin Cathedral, at the heart of that complex, is traditionally regarded as one of the oldest cathedrals in the world. Together with the churches of St Hripsime and St Gayane and the nearby ruins of Zvartnots, it forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The churches are spread across the town, so the map reads like a series of landmarks linked by straight avenues.
A Vagharshapat map poster shows a low, level city with a clear centre and broad streets, surrounded by the fields and orchards of one of Armenia's most fertile plains. For anyone who has made a pilgrimage, been baptised here or visited from Yerevan, it is a quiet, precise record of a deeply significant place.

Churches across town
St Hripsime and St Gayane stand in different parts of the city, each in its own grounds. On the map they act as anchors along the main roads.
Ararat plain
The city sits on almost perfectly flat land surrounded by vineyards, orchards and farm plots, which give the outskirts a fine, regular agricultural texture.

Zakaj Vagharshapat
