Open eastern shoreline
The coast runs as one long, nearly straight edge along the Bay of Bengal, giving the poster a clean boundary where the sand meets open water.

Vakarai Map Poster & Print
Vakarai sits on the east coast of Sri Lanka, in the northern part of Batticaloa District in the Eastern Province. From above, the place reads as a narrow band of land: the open shoreline of the Bay of Bengal on one side, shallow lagoons and wetlands on the other, and a loose pattern of village lanes running between them rather than a dense urban grid.
That arrangement is typical of this coast, where long sand barriers separate the sea from inland waters and settlements follow the dry ground. On a map the lagoons become broad pale shapes with irregular, fingered edges, while roads trace thin lines along the coast and cut across toward the interior. The result is a composition shaped far more by water than by buildings.
The area was hit hard by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and later by the final phase of the civil conflict in the east, and much of what stands today was rebuilt afterwards. A Vakarai map poster records the present layout: the shoreline, the lagoon edges and the modest network of lanes that connects the community's scattered neighbourhoods.

Lagoons and wetlands
Behind the beach, shallow lagoons spread inland with ragged, branching edges. On a monochrome print they form large soft areas that balance the fine lines of the roads.
Coastal road
A main road follows the coast north and south, with smaller lanes branching toward houses, paddy land and the water, so the street pattern stays open and linear.

Zakaj Vakarai
Zemljevid, ki nekaj pomeni
People hang a map of Vakarai because it is home, or because they worked, volunteered or travelled on this stretch of coast. The sea-and-lagoon outline is simple enough to read at a glance and quietly distinctive on a wall.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be changed, so the print can carry a family name, a year or a meaningful date. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, then download HD files for $9 or order a printed poster.
