The rapids
The narrow channel through the centre links two lakes and gave the town its name and its industry, a small but crucial feature on the map.

Valkeakoski Map Poster & Print
Valkeakoski lies in the Pirkanmaa region of southern Finland, on the narrow rapids that link lake Vanajavesi with lake Mallasvesi. From above, water defines the town: the centre sits on land between broad lakes, with channels, bridges and islands, and residential areas spread along the shores into the surrounding forest. The irregular coastline gives the map a strong, organic outline.
The town grew around the paper and pulp industry, which drew on the power of the rapids and the forests of the region. Large mill complexes still stand close to the water, and much of the town's development followed the growth of the industry in the twentieth century. The nearby Voipaala manor now houses an art centre.
A Valkeakoski map poster brings together lakes, rapids and a compact industrial town in a clear, well-balanced composition. The wide stretches of water frame the streets, and the channel through the centre gives the whole picture its focus. It is a calm, typically Finnish landscape.

Lake shorelines
Vanajavesi and Mallasvesi surround the town with broad water and irregular shores, giving the composition large open areas and a complex edge.
Mill complex
The paper mills occupy large sites near the water, their long, regular buildings clearly different from the residential streets around them.
