Venturosa is a municipality in the agreste of Pernambuco, the transitional zone between Brazil's humid coast and the dry sertão further inland. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets at the centre of a much larger rural area, with roads leading out across hilly, semi-arid land.
Life in the agreste has long revolved around farming and livestock, adapted to a climate with a long dry season.
