Wałcz lies in the lake country of northern Poland, in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, and its map is shaped as much by water as by streets. The town spreads between several lakes, including Raduń and Zamkowe, so neighbourhoods follow shorelines and roads bend around the water. Forests extend beyond the outskirts in almost every direction.
Wałcz is known for a major Olympic training centre used by Polish rowers, canoeists and other athletes, which makes full use of the surrounding lakes. The region was also crossed by the Pomeranian Wall, a line of German fortifications from the 1930s whose bunkers still lie in the nearby forests and attract visitors interested in military history.
