Waldshut-Tiengen lies on the High Rhine in the south of Baden-Württemberg, directly on the Swiss border. It was formed from two historic towns. Waldshut sits on a terrace above the Rhine, and Tiengen lies a few kilometres upstream in the valley of the Wutach. On the map they appear as two distinct cores joined by newer development.
Waldshut's old town is essentially one broad street, the Kaiserstraße, closed at each end by a medieval gate tower. The town's Chilbi festival recalls its survival of a siege in 1468. Across the Rhine, the river Aare flows in from Switzerland, joining the Rhine close to the town.
