The Bolshoy Zelenchuk river flows along it, and the village stretches beside the water in a long grid of straight streets and large household plots. Upstream, near Nizhny Arkhyz, the Special Astrophysical Observatory operates the BTA-6, once the world's largest optical telescope, and the RATAN-600 radio telescope stands nearby. Ancient Alanian churches also survive in the upper valley, among the oldest Christian buildings in Russia.
