Zigong lies in the rolling hills of southern Sichuan, and its streets rarely run straight for long. From above, the Fuxi River loops through the city in wide bends. Roads climb and curve around low ridges, and neighbourhoods fill the valleys between them. The result is a loose, organic pattern, with none of the rigid grid of the plains.
The city grew from salt. For about two thousand years, brine was drawn from deep wells here, and the industry shaped both the town and its wealth. The Shenhai Well, finished in 1835, is often cited as the first well in the world drilled deeper than one thousand metres. On a Zigong map poster the old core sits close to the river, and newer districts reach out along the valleys.
Zigong is also known for dinosaurs. Many fossils were found at Dashanpu, and a museum now stands on the site. The city is also famous for its lantern festival, when huge illuminated figures fill the parks each winter.
