Zile is in Tokat Province in north-central Turkey. From above, its layout is easy to read: a rounded hill with a castle on top sits near the middle, and the town spreads out from it on every side. Close to the mound the older streets are tight and irregular. Further out the blocks are newer and more regular, and past them the fields of the surrounding plain begin.
In antiquity the town was Zela. Julius Caesar won a fast victory near here in 47 BC and is said to have reported it with three words, veni, vidi, vici. The castle hill that dominates the town today is the same high point that has anchored the settlement for millennia.
A Zile map poster puts that hill at the centre of the composition. Streets curve around its base and then straighten as they move out into the plain, and the main roads leave town like spokes. The print shows an old citadel town that has grown outward in rings rather than along a single axis.
