From above, Ashtabula is shaped by where it meets Lake Erie. The shoreline runs almost straight along the top of the map, and the Ashtabula River breaks through it in a narrow, curving valley. At the river mouth the harbor opens out into piers, breakwalls and docks, while the rest of the city sits on the flatter ground to the south, laid out in blocks of residential streets.
The city grew in two parts, and the map still shows it. The harbor district clusters near the lake around the river mouth, and the older commercial center lies further inland along the main roads. Rail lines cross the city and head for the waterfront, a reminder that Ashtabula was built as a lake port handling coal and iron ore for the Great Lakes trade. The river valley winds between the two halves.

The harbor area is also known for its place in Underground Railroad history, when people escaping slavery crossed the lake toward Canada. The river runs north to the lake in a winding channel below the surrounding ground. Its bends cut a curved gap through the street pattern and split the harbor from the inland city.

Where the river meets Lake Erie, piers, slips and rail spurs gather in a dense knot of lines. This is the port that gave the city its purpose and its layout.
