Bento Gonçalves lies in the Serra Gaúcha, the mountainous region of north-eastern Rio Grande do Sul. The city is built across a series of ridges and valleys, and its street plan bends constantly to follow the slopes. Straight blocks appear only on the flatter ground of the centre. Elsewhere, roads follow the contours and switch back down to the valley floors.
Italian immigrants, mostly from the Veneto, settled the area from the 1870s and brought winemaking with them. Today Bento Gonçalves is often called Brazil's wine capital. The nearby Vale dos Vinhedos was the first Brazilian wine region to receive a geographical indication. The city is also a major centre of the furniture industry.
