Biddeford faces the city of Saco across the Saco River, and the river shapes the whole map. It bends through the centre, drops over falls beside large mill blocks and then widens towards the Atlantic. Bridges link the two cities at the falls, and the downtown streets climb away from the water in a compact grid.
Biddeford grew as a textile town in the nineteenth century, and the massive brick mills along the river still set the scale of downtown, many of them now converted to housing, studios and workshops. East of the centre, roads cross marsh and woodland to the coast, where Biddeford Pool and the beaches trace a ragged edge of coves and points.

The University of New England also has a campus here near the mouth of the river, adding another cluster of paths and buildings to the drawing.
