Colwood Map Poster & Print
Colwood is one of the West Shore communities of Greater Victoria, on the southern tip of Vancouver Island in British Columbia. On a map it is defined by its shoreline: the long, narrow spit enclosing Esquimalt Lagoon, the coast facing the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and the entrance to Esquimalt Harbour to the east. Inland, suburban streets climb toward forested hills.
Colwood is home to Hatley Castle, an early twentieth-century mansion whose grounds are now the campus of Royal Roads University. Nearby, Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse, the first permanent lighthouse on Canada's west coast, form a national historic site at the harbour entrance. These places give the city a strong sense of history despite its largely suburban character.
A Colwood map poster balances water, parkland and neighbourhood streets. The lagoon and spit form a graceful curve along the coast, the Royal Roads grounds add a large open space, and the curving suburban roads fill the land behind. The result is a varied, natural composition that reads very differently from the grid of a typical North American suburb.

Royal Roads grounds
The campus around Hatley Castle occupies a wide area of lawns, gardens and forest near the lagoon, visible on the poster as a large, lightly marked space.
Fisgard Lighthouse
At the harbour entrance, Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse sit on a small headland, a compact detail on the poster where the land meets the water.
