Ellensburg sits almost exactly in the middle of Washington State, on the broad valley floor east of the Cascades. From above, the town reads as a tidy grid of short blocks around a historic core, with farmland stretching outward in large rectangular parcels. The Yakima River runs along the western edge, its braided channel and wooded banks drawing a soft, irregular line against all that geometry.
Much of the brick downtown was rebuilt after a fire in 1889, and the streets still keep the close, walkable scale of that period. Central Washington University takes up a large block of the northern side of town, where its quads, paths and playing fields loosen the grid into open, curving shapes. Interstate 90 passes along the southern edge, with its wide interchange ramps looping out beside the town.

The town is also known for the Ellensburg Rodeo, held every Labor Day weekend, which brings the whole valley into town for a few days each year.
