Flores Island Map Poster & Print
Flores is one of the larger islands in Indonesia's Lesser Sunda chain. It is a long, narrow landmass running east to west, bent into a series of volcanic ridges. On a map it looks more like a spine than a round island. One main highway, the Trans-Flores road, winds along its length through the mountains, and bays and inlets cut into both the north and south coasts.
At the western end, Labuan Bajo faces a sea dotted with islands. It is the gateway to Komodo National Park and its well-known monitor lizards. Toward the centre, towns such as Ruteng, Bajawa and Ende sit in highland valleys and on coastal plains. Near Moni, the summit of Kelimutu holds three crater lakes whose colours change over time, a small but notable detail on the map.
The name Flores comes from the Portuguese word for flowers. It was on this island, in the Liang Bua cave, that the remains of the small hominin Homo floresiensis were found in 2003. A Flores Island map poster traces the island along its full length, from the scattered islands of the west to the far eastern tip near Larantuka.

Western island sea
Beyond Labuan Bajo the sea is scattered with dozens of islands and islets, including Komodo and Rinca. They turn the western edge of the map into a fine archipelago.
Trans-Flores road
One winding highway crosses the island from end to end, climbing through the highlands and linking the main towns. It is a long thread that ties the narrow landmass together.

Flores suits travellers who made the slow journey across it, from diving near Komodo to watching the sunrise over Kelimutu, and people with family roots in its towns. Its long, narrow outline makes a striking and unusual shape on the wall.
