Gusong is the seat of Gulin County in Luzhou, in the south of Sichuan near the border with Guizhou. The area is mountainous. Steep hills rise around the town, and the flat land available for building is limited to the valley floor. As a result, Gusong has a long, winding form instead of the regular grid seen in cities on the plains.
The river and the main roads follow the same valley, and the streets stack along them in narrow bands. Where the valley widens, the town gets denser, and where it narrows, the built-up area thins into a single corridor. A Gusong map poster shows that relationship with the terrain very clearly: the town's outline is effectively the shape of the valley itself.
Gulin County is known in China as the home of Langjiu, a well-known baijiu produced in the county's town of Erlang.
