Heverlee sits directly south of Leuven's ring road. From above, the dense medieval city gives way to a looser pattern of residential streets, university buildings and open green land. The Dijle river runs through the district on its way north into Leuven. It brings a soft, meandering line to a map that is otherwise made of suburban blocks and campus paths.
Much of Heverlee's character comes from the Arenberg estate. The castle and its park now form the heart of a KU Leuven science and engineering campus, so lecture halls and laboratories sit among old trees and lawns. Further south, the wide Heverleebos and Meerdaalwoud forests appear on the map as a large blank field crossed only by thin forest tracks.

The Park Abbey, one of the best-preserved abbey complexes in Flanders, lies on the district's eastern side with its ponds and walled grounds. There is also a Commonwealth war cemetery.
