The confluence
The Appomattox joins the James right at the tip of City Point, and on the poster the meeting of the two rivers frames the oldest streets like a bow.

Hopewell Map Poster & Print
Hopewell occupies a point of land at the junction of two rivers, the Appomattox flowing in from the west and the James sweeping past to the north and east. From above, the city is defined by water on two sides: a tight older street grid on the bluff near the confluence, then broader suburban curves and industrial sites spreading south and along the shoreline.
Its oldest part, City Point, dates to 1613 and served as the headquarters of Ulysses S. Grant during the Siege of Petersburg, when its wharves became one of the busiest ports in the world for Union supplies. The modern city grew rapidly after 1913, when DuPont built a large plant here, and chemical industry still shapes the riverfront.
A Hopewell map poster shows how much the rivers dictate the city. The James widens dramatically at this point, and its curves wrap the peninsula in white space. Against that open water, the dense grid of City Point and the long industrial parcels along the shore stand out clearly, an unusual mix of colonial landing, Civil War depot and twentieth-century factory town.

City Point grid
A small, regular grid on the bluff marks the historic core, where Grant's cabin and the old wharf area stood during the 1864 to 1865 campaign.
Riverside industry
Large, simple blocks along the water trace the plants that grew after 1913, giving the southern and eastern edges a coarser, more geometric texture.
