Ilorin, capital of Kwara State, lies in the transition zone between Nigeria's forested south and the savanna of the north. It grew as a major trading centre in the nineteenth century and became the seat of an emirate, with Yoruba, Fulani, Hausa and other communities living in the city. The Asa River runs northward through the urban area, and the city spreads on either side of it.
The older part of the city, centred on the Emir's palace and the central mosque, has a tight, irregular network of lanes. On the river, the Asa Dam holds back a reservoir that appears as a smooth shape among the streets.
