Koper is Slovenia's main port town, on the short stretch of Adriatic coast between Italy and Croatia. Its old town began as an island in the bay and was reached for centuries by a causeway. Land reclamation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries joined it firmly to the mainland, but the map still shows the rounded outline of the original island.
Inside that outline, narrow streets climb gently to Tito Square, where the Praetorian Palace, the Loggia and the Cathedral of the Assumption with its tall bell tower stand together. The Venetian influence shows in the architecture and in the plan itself, with tight lanes, small squares and a dense fabric of stone houses leading down to the waterfront.
To the north and east, the Port of Koper, the largest in Slovenia, spreads across reclaimed land with its docks, container terminals and basins, and newer residential districts rise on the slopes inland.
