Nasiriyah Map Poster & Print
Nasiriyah stretches along the Euphrates in southern Iraq, and the river is the spine of every map of it. The central districts form a fairly regular grid on the banks, with bridges carrying roads across the water and long streets running parallel to the current. Beyond the built-up area the land is almost perfectly flat, crossed by canals, farm tracks and highways heading north and south.
The city was founded in the 1870s under Ottoman rule and named after Nasir al-Saadoun, a leader of the Muntafiq tribal confederation. It is now the capital of Dhi Qar province, and its surroundings are among the oldest settled landscapes on earth: the ruins of Ur, with its great ziggurat, lie a short drive to the southwest, and the Mesopotamian marshes spread to the east.
A Nasiriyah map poster keeps the image restrained, letting the river and the planned streets carry it. The regular blocks contrast with the soft curves of the Euphrates, and the thinning edges hint at the open plain beyond. It is a map of a modern city with a very old landscape just outside the frame.

Ottoman-era grid
Laid out in the late nineteenth century, the core follows an orderly pattern of blocks, clearer and more regular than the organic lanes of many older Iraqi towns.
Canals and plain
At the edges the street network gives way to irrigation channels and field boundaries, fine lines on flat land that remind the viewer of the farming country around the city.
