Yabrūd lies in the Qalamoun Mountains north of Damascus, at an elevation of well over a thousand metres. The town fills a valley enclosed by pale, rocky hills, and its streets stretch along the valley floor rather than spreading freely. From above, the built-up area has a long, irregular shape, with lanes branching up the lower slopes until the terrain becomes too steep.
The surrounding cliffs and ravines contain a series of rock shelters that became important to prehistoric archaeology in the twentieth century, yielding stone tools that helped define stages of the Palaeolithic in the Levant. On a Yabrūd map poster, the town's compact form against the empty contours of the mountains shows how closely settlement here has depended on shelter and water.
The town is also known for its old Christian community and for a cathedral dedicated to Saints Constantine and Helen, built using stones of an ancient temple.
