Abilene grew up along the Texas and Pacific Railway in 1881 and took its name from Abilene, Kansas, a cattle-drive town. On a map, the railway line still runs east to west through the downtown. A regular grid of streets extends in every direction across the flat West Texas plain.
The city is home to three universities: Abilene Christian, Hardin-Simmons and McMurry. Their campuses form distinct shapes within the grid. To the west lies Dyess Air Force Base, with its long runway visible even on a large-scale map. Reservoirs like Lake Fort Phantom Hill and Lake Kirby sit on the city's edges.
