Abou el Hassan lies in the hill country north of Chlef, in the part of northern Algeria where the Dahra range rises between the Chelif valley and the Mediterranean coast. On a map the town is a compact cluster of streets among the slopes. The roads out of town follow whichever routes the terrain allows.
Beyond the built-up core the drawing becomes looser. Country roads, tracks and scattered houses follow the ridges and dip into small valleys. In black and white these lines look almost like contour lines.
