Alta lies at the head of the Altafjord in Finnmark, northern Norway, well above the Arctic Circle. The town is not one compact centre but several districts strung along the shore and the river valley. On a map, roads follow the curve of the fjord and link neighbourhoods separated by water, woodland and open ground.
The Alta River, known for its salmon, reaches the fjord here. Upstream, a hydroelectric dam project in the late 1970s and early 1980s triggered major protests that became central to Sámi rights in Norway. Near the town, the rock carvings at Hjemmeluft are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the modern Northern Lights Cathedral has become a landmark.
