Anan lies on the eastern coast of Shikoku, south of Tokushima, where the Naka River reaches the sea. From above the city is a mix of flat delta land and rugged coastline: waterways split the plain into separate districts, while to the south the shore becomes a sequence of small bays, headlands and islands backed by wooded hills.
Anan is closely associated with the LED. The blue light-emitting diode developed here at Nichia Corporation by Shuji Nakamura, work later recognised with the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics, made efficient white LED lighting possible. The city has embraced this connection, using LED illumination in public spaces as part of its identity.
Along the coast, industrial sites and port facilities occupy reclaimed land in clean geometric shapes, contrasting with the irregular natural shoreline further south.
