Angers lies in western France, on the Maine River a few kilometres above where it joins the Loire. The river cuts the city in two. The historic centre, with its cathedral and castle, rises on the eastern bank, while the old Doutre district faces it across the water to the west. Boulevards on the line of the former walls trace a loose ring around the centre.
The Château d'Angers dominates the riverbank with seventeen round towers in alternating bands of dark schist and pale stone. Inside hangs the Apocalypse Tapestry, a vast fourteenth-century work and one of the great surviving medieval textiles. From above, the fortress appears as a heavy pentagonal outline beside the Maine, clearly different from the finer streets around it.
Angers is also a city of gardens and green space. The Lac de Maine and its parkland lie to the southwest, and the wide meadows of the Basses Vallées Angevines lie to the north. The river runs north to south through the city, crossed by several bridges linking the historic centre to the Doutre, before it joins the Loire just downstream.
Lac de Maine
A large lake with parkland around it on the southwest side of the city. It is one of the widest open spaces on the map and a local place for walks and water sports.
