Arcos lies in the central-west of Minas Gerais, in a landscape of rolling hills and farmland. From above, the town has a fairly regular street grid that spreads over gentle slopes. Roads run out towards neighbouring towns and the surrounding countryside.
The municipality is known for its limestone. Quarrying and the production of lime and cement are central to the local economy, and the karst landscape around the town includes caves. On the map, the quarries show as areas where the regular pattern of fields and roads suddenly stops.
