Arcot stands on the southern bank of the Palar River in northern Tamil Nadu, across the water from Ranipet and a short distance from Vellore. The riverbed, wide and sandy for much of the year, forms a strong edge along the north of the map, with the town spreading south from it in a close network of lanes.
In the eighteenth century Arcot was the capital of the Nawabs of the Carnatic, and in 1751 it became famous for the siege in which Robert Clive held the town's fort, a turning point for British power in south India. Mosques, tombs and traces of the old fortifications still punctuate the dense older quarters.
An Arcot map poster balances these two elements, river and town. The Palar gives a broad, sweeping line, while the historic core forms a compact knot of streets from which roads lead toward Vellore, Kanchipuram and Chennai. Outer areas spread across a flat plain of fields and irrigation tanks, adding a looser texture around the edges.
