Árgos lies in the northeastern Peloponnese, at the edge of the fertile Argolic plain, a short distance inland from the Gulf of Argolis and the port town of Nafplio. From above, the modern town spreads outward from its centre across flat land, while the steep hill of Larissa, crowned by a medieval castle, rises abruptly on its western side.
Árgos is among the oldest continuously inhabited towns in Europe, and its ancient past is visible in the city itself. The large ancient theatre, cut into the slope of a hill, remains one of the most notable in Greece. On a map, the archaeological areas appear as open spaces within the otherwise dense street pattern.
