Ariccia sits in the Alban Hills south-east of Rome, one of the Castelli Romani towns that grew up on the slopes of an ancient volcanic landscape. The terrain is anything but flat, and the map shows it: streets bend with the contours, the historic centre holds to a ridge, and wooded valleys cut deep green gaps through the built-up area.
The heart of the town is its piazza, laid out in the seventeenth century with Gian Lorenzo Bernini's church of Santa Maria Assunta facing Palazzo Chigi and its large wooded park. Just beside it, a nineteenth-century viaduct carries the road across the valley on stacked arches, a straight line connecting two sides of the slope. Ariccia is also known across Italy for porchetta, its slow-roasted pork.
